How much should I pay in quarterly taxes?

Enter what you expect to clear this year and the calculator spreads your federal bill across the payment dates. It uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction and assumes no credits, so treat it as a floor, not a promise.

$2,489per estimated payment
$9,955federal balance for the year
21%of each business dollar to set aside
Self-employment tax (Schedule SE)$6,782
Federal income tax$3,173
Standard deduction (single)−$16,100
Less withholding−$0
Total to pay through estimates$9,955

2026 federal brackets and standard deduction. No credits, no QBI deduction, no state tax. Your actual bill can be lower; the estimate is a floor to plan around.

Who has to pay quarterly

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax after withholding and credits, the IRS expects you to pay as you go. For self-employed people that usually means four estimated payments: April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the next year.

You can also cover the bill by having more withheld from a W-2 job or a spouse's job. Withholding counts as paid evenly through the year, which is why the calculator subtracts it before dividing.

What the number is made of

Two taxes stack on self-employment profit. Self-employment tax is Social Security and Medicare on 92.35% of your profit, and it applies from the first dollar once you clear $400. Income tax then applies to your profit (plus any wages) after half the SE tax and the standard deduction come off.

The set-aside rate at the bottom is the business's share of the bill divided by your profit. Most people land somewhere between a fifth and a third, which is why "set aside 25 to 30%" is the usual rule of thumb.

How to avoid the underpayment penalty

The safe harbor is simple: pay at least 100% of last year's total tax through the year (110% if your income was over $150,000), or 90% of this year's, whichever is smaller. Hit either number and there is no penalty even if you owe more in April.

If your income is lumpy, you can pay more in the quarters you earn more and file Form 2210 with the annualized method. Toozi tracks the running number from your actual books so you do not have to guess in January.

Questions

Does this include state taxes?

No. It is federal only. Most states with an income tax also want quarterly payments; California, for example, front-loads them (30%, 40%, 0%, 30%). Toozi tracks the state estimate alongside the federal one.

What if I started my business mid-year?

Pick the number of payment dates left in the year. The calculator divides the balance across them. You can also use the annualized method on Form 2210 so earlier quarters are not penalized.

Are my expenses already in here?

Enter profit, not revenue: what's left after supplies, software, mileage and the rest. If you do not know that number yet, the set-aside calculator works from a percentage instead.

What does Toozi do differently?

It keeps the books current from your texts and bank feed, so the estimate updates itself. It texts you before each due date with the amount, and files the return at the end of the year.

Tax is a doozy.
Toozi isn't.
