I got 1099s from 2 apps — what now?
First: don't panic, and don't file twice. Multiple 1099s all flow into one tax return.
Whether it's DoorDash and Uber, or Rover and Instacart, here's how it works: each app that paid you $600+ sends a 1099 (usually 1099-NEC or 1099-K). You report ALL of it as self-employment income on one Schedule C — or separate Schedule Cs if the work is genuinely different kinds of business.
The critical part everyone misses: the 1099s show what you were PAID, not what you OWE tax on. Your mileage, phone bill, hot bags, parking — those come off the top. Gig drivers routinely overpay by thousands because they report the 1099 totals and deduct nothing.
Also know: the IRS gets a copy of every 1099 you get. If you skip one, their computers notice and send a letter with penalties attached. Report everything, deduct everything you're entitled to.
One more thing — those apps don't withhold taxes like an employer does. If your combined 1099 income is real money, quarterly estimated payments (April, June, September, January) keep you from an April surprise.
