Write-offs
What house cleaners can write off
If you clean homes on your own, or with a helper or two, you're running a business, and these come off your income before tax is figured. For most cleaners the two biggest are the miles between houses and the supplies, so those come first.
Miles between houses
Business miles72.5¢ a mile for January to June 2026 and 76¢ from July, or actual car costs. 100 miles a week is roughly $3,500 a year off your income.
Supply runsTrips to the store for supplies count, the same as trips between clients.
Parking and tollsDeductible on top of the mileage rate.
Supplies and equipment
Cleaning productsSprays, concentrates, disinfectant, polish, the things you bring into a client's home.
EquipmentVacuums, mops, buckets, caddies, steamers. Small items come off right away; a big purchase can too, under the de minimis rule.
LaundryWashing the cloths and mop heads, at the laundromat or the business share at home.
Helpers and the business
Helpers you payContract labor on line 11. Anyone you pay $2,000 or more during 2026 gets a 1099-NEC ($600 for payments made through 2025).
Liability insurance and bondingClients often ask for it; the premium is deductible.
Scheduling and payment appsJobber, Square, card processing fees.
Uniforms with your logoBranded shirts count. Everyday clothes don't.
Phone and getting clients
Phone and dataThe business share: client texts, scheduling, maps.
Ads and listingsThumbtack, Nextdoor, Facebook ads, flyers, business cards.
Usually doesn't count
The drive from home to your first house, unless home is your principal place of business
Everyday clothes and shoes, even if you only clean in them
Supplies you use to clean your own home
Cash you paid a helper with no record of who, when and how much
What to set aside
How much to set aside for taxes
No booth rent, but gas and supplies add up, and nobody withholds tax. Put in a normal week and see roughly what to move to savings each week.
$282to set aside each week you work
22%of every dollar of profit
$3,387roughly, each quarterly payment
Services + tips (48 weeks)$69,120
Supplies−$2,640
Mileage (5,760 miles at the 2026 IRS rate)−$4,277
Profit you pay tax on$62,203
Self-employment tax$8,789
Federal income tax$4,757
Set aside for the year$13,546
A rough estimate, not a promise: 2026 federal rates, single filer, standard deduction, no other income, credits or QBI deduction. Every write-off you log lowers the profit line, and the set-aside with it.
