How Do I Actually Pay Taxes on a 1099-MISC? (IRS Direct Pay, State, and When)

You got paid on a 1099, nobody took tax out, and you’ve been saving. Now: where does the money actually go? For federal tax, the easiest way is IRS Direct Pay, free from your bank account. For state tax, it’s your state’s tax website. Here’s how to do both, and when.

Run your own numbers: free quarterly tax estimator, 2026 rates.

First: what kind of income is it?

  • Pay for work you did (a client, an app, a salon): that’s self-employment income, even if it came on a 1099-MISC instead of a 1099-NEC. It goes on Schedule C. You owe self-employment tax plus income tax on the profit.
  • A prize, award or other one-time money (often Box 3 on a 1099-MISC): it’s “other income.” Income tax only, no self-employment tax.
  • Rent you collected (Box 1): it goes on Schedule E, not Schedule C.

Not sure which? Ask the payer what the money was for. That decides it, not the form.

How much to pay

The quarterly tax estimator takes your profit for the year and shows what each payment should be. If you only want a percent to move each time you get paid, use the set-aside calculator. Many people land between 15% and 30% of profit for federal tax.

IRS Direct Pay, step by step

  1. Go to irs.gov/payments and pick Direct Pay.
  2. Reason for payment: Estimated Tax if you’re paying ahead for this year. Balance Due if it’s for a year that’s already over.
  3. Apply it to: 1040ES for estimated tax. Pick the tax year the money is for, not the year you’re paying in.
  4. Confirm who you are with a past tax return (filing status, address, SSN).
  5. Enter your bank info and the amount. Save the confirmation number.

The most common mistake is picking the wrong tax year. A January payment for 2026 income goes to tax year 2026.

How to pay your state

If your state has an income tax, it wants its share too, usually on the same dates. Go to your state’s Department of Revenue website and look for “make a payment” or “estimated payment.” In Indiana, for example, that’s INTIME, and the payment covers county tax too. Most states let you pay from your bank for free.

When to pay (2026 income)

Due dateCovers money earned
April 15, 2026January to March
June 15, 2026April and May
September 15, 2026June to August
January 15, 2027September to December
April 15, 2027Anything still owed, with your return

Missed the earlier dates? Pay now anyway. The IRS charges a small interest-like penalty for each quarter you were short, and it stops growing once you pay. See what it costs with the late payment penalty calculator, and read quarterly estimated taxes, explained.

If you can’t pay it all

Still file on time. Then set up a payment plan on the IRS website. A short plan gives you up to 180 days. A monthly plan works for balances up to $50,000 and lowers the late-payment penalty while it’s active. Filing late costs far more than paying late.

Never wonder what to pay again

Toozi keeps your books from your texts and your bank. Before each due date, it texts you the amount for the IRS and your state, with the link to pay. At year end, it files your return. Start at toozitax.app.
