Why Is My 1099 Tax Bill So High? A $28,000 Example, Line by Line

“One year I made about $28,000 and my tax bill was $5,600.” That’s a real post from a gig worker, and the math checks out. On 1099 income you pay two taxes, nobody takes them out along the way, and the whole bill shows up at once. Here’s where every dollar of that $5,600 comes from, and how to make the next one smaller.

The $28,000 bill, line by line

Single filer, $28,000 of profit, no other job, no write-offs tracked, 2026 federal rates:

StepAmount
Profit$28,000
Self-employment tax (15.3% of 92.35% of profit)$3,956
Half of that comes off your income−$1,978
Standard deduction (single)−$16,100
Income left to tax$9,922
Federal income tax (10% bracket)$992
Federal total$4,948

Add a state income tax of 2% to 3% of profit and you’re at about $5,500 to $5,800. That’s the $5,600. Check your own numbers with the self-employment tax calculator.

Three reasons it feels so high

  1. Self-employment tax is the big one. Look at the table: $3,956 of the $4,948 is self-employment tax, not income tax. That’s Social Security and Medicare. At a job, your employer pays half and you never see it. On a 1099, you pay both halves. Self-employment tax, explained.
  2. Nothing came out of your pay. A W-2 worker making $28,000 pays tax too, a little at a time from every check. On a 1099 it’s one bill in April. Same money, much bigger shock.
  3. Untracked write-offs. Tax is on profit. Every business cost you didn’t write down was taxed as if you kept it.

What write-offs would have saved

Say that same worker had tracked $6,000 of costs: phone, mileage, supplies, app fees. Profit drops to $22,000 and the federal bill drops to about $3,543. That’s about $1,400 less, just from writing things down. For a driver, mileage alone often covers it: see the mileage deduction calculator.

ProfitFederal taxShare of profit
$28,000$4,94817.7%
$22,000$3,54316.1%
$18,000$2,60614.5%

If the 1099 money is on top of a job

Then it costs more. The job’s pay already used up the standard deduction and the 10% bracket. $28,000 of side profit on top of a $40,000 job adds about $7,079 of federal tax, about 25% of the side profit. See how to use your W-4 to cover a side hustle.

How to make next year’s bill not a surprise

  • Set aside a percent of every payment the day it lands. Get your number from the set-aside calculator. For the example above, it’s about 18%.
  • Pay four times a year, not once. The next date is January 15, 2027. See how to actually pay.
  • Track every business cost as it happens, not in April.

Questions people ask

Why are taxes on 1099 income so high?

You pay two taxes: self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare, about 14% of profit) plus income tax. Nothing comes out of your pay, so it arrives as one bill. On $28,000 of profit, self-employment tax is $3,956 of the $4,948 federal bill.

How much tax do I owe on $28,000 of 1099 income?

For 2026, a single filer with $28,000 of profit and no other job owes about $4,948 in federal tax: $3,956 of self-employment tax and $992 of income tax. State tax adds a few hundred more.

How can I lower my 1099 tax bill?

Track your business costs. Tax is on profit, so every cost you write down lowers it. $6,000 of costs on $28,000 of income cuts the federal bill by about $1,400.
